Mandaly in Bristol England 1903

                ...so, Iron Barque.

Mandaly Beached 1911

Iron Barques (pronounced iron"barks") were the workhorse of the golden age of sail in the mid-19th century. They attained passages that nearly matched full-rigged ships but held an advantage of operation with smaller crews. Barques could out perform many of the commercial ship designs of their day.

The Iron Barque Company operates on the same fundamental principles that these ships were intended and designed for - reliable, efficient, experienced, capable.

Our name pays homage to Greg's Great Grandmother and Great-Great Grandfather who co-owned shares in a Norwegian iron barque named the Mandalay. In 1911, after years of service sailing the world, she encountered a terrible storm off the SW Coast of Australia. After a three-day battle against the elements she was skillfully piloted between off-shore rocky shoals and purposely run aground and beached near Walpole. Captain Tonnesen was created to save all lives on board.

Although the ship remained intact for decades, time eventually took its toll and the Mandalay eventually broke apart at the waterline. However today, every 11 years (or so) the sand slips away and the exposed iron hull appears to a lucky few for a few short weeks before she is buried again.

She was last seen again in Feburary of 2021 and is expected to last beneath the sand for another 200 years.
